Self-Made $9.58 Before dropping Self-Made, Rocko spent years in the background, writing and producing hits for others while developing the careers of Sammy Sam and Young Dro. After shopping around the demo of his solo single "Umma Do Me," he was snapped up by Def Jam in a swift -- maybe a little shortsighted -- manner. "Umma" is a hook-filled monster with just the right amount of cocky attitude bumping against a royal Drumma Boy production. It sounds great at a party, a club, on the radio, or any other place where it's the chorus that matters. That Rocko's style is an unoriginal mix of Young Jeezy, T.I., and Shawty Lo didn't matter much as the four-minute jam climbed the charts, but when he creates anything less than "Umma," it's detrimental. Past the hit, Self-Made's first half is plagued by empty, everyday party numbers, the most shameless of them all being "Old Skool," where "Umma"'s mediocre line "My ol' school cost more than your new school" is blown up into a full song. Fortunately, things pick up once the convincing club track "Like This Here" hits. The story-song "Snakes" is interesting as a Dirty South alternative to R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet," while the hood fantasy "Thugs Need Love Too" features some steamy Monica and Rocko interaction, which shouldn't be too surprising since they're a married couple in real life. As evidenced by the guest appearances of Monica, and even Lloyd, Self-Made would be much better if it gave some more of Rocko's high-profile friends an opportunity to put some flavor on the tracks. Made in Dagenham $13.59 Made in Dagenham is a film about a strike at a Ford Motor plant in the London suburb of the title in 1968 by women workers seeking to achieve equal pay with men. The setting and plot allow for a soundtrack full of pop/rock songs of around that period, some of them touching on the theme and/or sung by women, most of those, naturally, Britons like Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, and Lulu. Jamaican Desmond Dekker's renditions of his hit "Israelites" and of Jimmy Cliff's "You Can Get It If You Really Want" both are in the spirit of the movie's message, as are the songs of some Americans, notably the Temptations ("Get Ready"), James Brown ("It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World," with its tag line, "but it wouldn't mean nothin' without a woman or a girl"), and Mama Cass ("It's Getting Better"). Sometimes, the songs are just good oldies, like Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs' "Wooly Bully" or Traffic's "Paper Sun." The album cover proclaims this to be "music from and inspired by" the film, but the only song that could have been inspired by it is the title tune, newly written by David Arnold and Billy Bragg, and sung by Shaw, in the style of the other tracks on the album. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |

Made in Germany $18.39 Having lost its second major-label recording contract following the release of its ninth studio album, Future Games: A Magical-Kahauna Dream, in 1977, Spirit toured Europe in the winter of 1978, resulting in the release of the group's first live album, which appeared in three different configurations in three different territories. The basic source of the album was the band's March 11, 1978, show at the Rainbow in London. The British version, on Illegal Records, was called Live Spirit, which was also the title of the U.S. album on Spirit's own Potato Records label, but the West German release was called Made in Germany. All three versions include performances of five vintage Spirit songs, "Animal Zoo," "1984," "Nature's Way," "It's All the Same," and "I Got a Line on You," as well as the previously unreleased songs "Looking Down From a Mountain" and "Hollywood Dream." To these, the British album adds "Downer" and a cover of the Troggs' (by way of Jimi Hendrix) "Wild Thing." Neither of those tracks appear on the U.S. LP, which substitutes two other new Spirit songs, "Rock 'N' Roll Planet" and "These Are Words," recorded in Florida. The German version is identical to the U.S. one in its contents (albeit with a different song sequence) except that it adds one more track, recorded in Germany, "Rockpalast Jam," referring the German TV show Rockpalast, on which the group appeared. Thus, Made in Germany is a composite of performances from several different locations, and it also sounds like a fair amount of editing and overdubbing was done in the studio. The new songs, particularly "Rockpalast Jam" and "Rock 'N' Roll Planet," are slight as compositions, though they provide a structure for guitarist/songwriter Randy California's inventive improvisations. The familiar material is well-performed by the trio of California, bassist Larry "Fuzzy" Knight, and Ed Cassidy, with "It's All the Same" stretched out to ten minutes to allow room for a drum solo before segueing into the band's biggest hit and natural show closer, "I Got a Line on You." Moving across local, regional, and national scales, St. John shows how government officials, Native American raiders, ranchers, railroad builders, miners, investors, immigrants, and smugglers contributed to the rise of state power on the border and developed strategies to navigate the increasingly regulated landscape. Over the border's history, the U.S. and Mexican states gradually developed an expanding array of official laws, ad hoc arrangements, government agents, and physical barriers that did not close the line, but made it a flexible barrier that restricted the movement of some people, goods, and animals without impeding others. By the 1930s, their efforts had created the foundations of the modern border control apparatus. Drawing on extensive research in U.S. and Mexican archives, Line in the Sand weaves together a transnational history of how an undistinguished strip of land became the significant and symbolic space of state power and national definition that we know today. |

The Punch Line $8.78 The Minutemen may have come out of the same California hardcore scene that produced Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Fear, but they not only bore little resemblance to their West Coast contemporaries, they didn't sound much like anyone else in American rock at that time. The Punch Line was the band's first album, packing 18 tunes into less than 25 minutes, and if the music shares hardcore's lust for speed and assaultive rhythmic punch, their sharp, fragmented melodies, complex tempos, and overtly poetic and political lyrics made clear they were rugged individuals; imagine James Blood Ulmer teaching Wire how to get funky and you start to get an idea of what The Punch Line sounds like. It wasn't until the band began to slow down a bit on What Makes a Man Start Fires? that the strength of the group's individual songs became clear, and The Punch Line works better as a unified sonic assault than as a collection of tunes, but moments do stand out, especially "Tension," "Fanatics," and the title cut, which certainly lends a new perspective to Native American history.
