Can human beings stop the world spinning?
When I was about 7 years old, my science teacher at school told me that if every single person in the world faced east and took one step forward in that direction (at the same time) then the world would stop spinning...
Apparently the downward force of 6 billion feet pushing simultaneously against the spin of the planet will cancel out the rotation.
Every since he told me that I have wondered whether it's true. So is it true or is it just hogswash?
It is not the downward force but the horizontal component of the reaction to the force that is accelerating the person to the east that would slow the planet. Approximate earth data from the referenced sources:
mass of earth = 6x10^24 kg
radius of earth = 6.4x10^6 m
population of earth = 7 billion
My calculation:
I will assume all people are lined up single file on the equator with an average mass of 50 kg (the average includes kids).
They step east one meter in 0.2 sec. The acceleration is given by s=(1/2) a t^2 ---> a = 2s/t^2 = 2*1/0.04 = 50 m/s^2
The reaction force = m a = 50 * 7x10^9 = 3.5x10^11 N
torque T = r F = 6.4x10^6 * 3.5x10^11 = 2.2x10^18 N-m
moment of inertia of the earth, I = (2/5) M R^2 =
0.4 * 6*10^24 * (6.4x10^6)^2 =1.0x10^38 kg-m^2
angular acceleration due to step = α = T/I = 2.2x10^18 / 1x10^38
= 2.2x10-20 rad/sec^2
Angular velocity of earth is 2 pi / (24*3600) = 7x10-5 rad/s
Change in angular velocity due to step of the earths population =
α*0.2sec = 4.4x10-21 rad/sec
fractional change in earths speed 4.4x10-21 / 7x10-5 = 6x10-17
It is absolute hogwash. It is not even close to producing a significant change in the earths speed of rotation.
Also, when all those people stop moving, the speed of earths rotation will go back to what it was before they all took the step.
